Juan Carlos Tabío

Juan Carlos Tabí­o's career as a filmmaker began when he met with a family friend who was an administrator at the ICAIC who steered him away from the world of politics his parents envisioned for him. He began working for the ICAIC in 1961 where he produced his first documentary two years later. In the next twenty years he made more than thirty documentaries and in 1983 he filmed his first feature film, Se Permuta (The Exchange). Ten years later he partnered with Tomás Gutiérrez Alea to produce Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) and Guantanamera in (1995), two of the most widely known films in Cuban cinema. He has since gone on to film Lista de espera (Waiting List) (2008) among others. He has taught courses at the International School for Film and Television (EICTV) on script writing, directing, and acting.

Juan Carlos Tabío empezó su carrera como cineasta cuando conoció a un amigo de sus padres quien trabajaba como administrador del ICAIC. Aunque sus padres querían que fuera pol!­tico, decidió empezar a trabajar con el ICAIC en 1961 donde realizó su primer documental dos años después. Durante los siguientes veinte años, realizó más de treinta documentales y en 1983 rodó su primer largometraje, Se permuta. Diez años después hizo su primer colaboración para realizar Fresa y chocolate (1993) y Guantanamera (1995), dos de las pelí­culas cubanas más conocidas. Desde entonces ha producido obras como Lista de espera (2008) entre otros. Ha enseñado cursos de guion, dirección y actuación en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión.
