My Esteemed Friend
Your much appreciated missive bearing date of April 23rd came to hand a few days ago, and I would have answered it sooner, had I not been so very busy in the Office. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for the amt enclosed, and rest assured that this, as well as previous generous acts will never be forgotten by me, I have often desired to write you but since our leaving (Va) I have never had an opportunity. I am indeed truly sorry to hear of the death of your kind brother, whom I esteemed so highly, and can only offer my heartfelt simpithies in your sad bereavement, He was a dear friend of mine, and I will ever cherish his memory with the deepest feeling of respect and gratitude. Both myself and brother are in this Office, and are in good health. (Johnnie) Long is in Louisiana, or was the last I heard of him. I would like to visit you when I am released if I have enough money. I have seen Miss Mary only once since I left (Va) and that was previous to her marriage. Brother wishes to be remembered to you. Write again to your
ever greatful
