Description
An account of the resource
This new collection of Ghost Posters––designed for a set of Cuban film projects which largely remain unfilmed––seeks to combat the tendency of the national film narrative to underrepresent women directors, and instead reveals their presence through different generations, perspectives, discourses, and spaces. The fact that women designers and visual artists created these posters can be understood as an act of self-sufficiency of gender and as a visual expression of underappreciated talent.

Film poster for Al Amanecer, a film by Sisy Gómez, designed by Alicia de la Campa.
A woman (possibly a mermaid) with scales, shells, and other marine life on her skin and covering her hair emerges from a body of water. In her hand she is holding a butterfly-like creature on a rod; the butterfly has a human-like torso in place of the thorax and abdomen, and human-like arms extending out at the bottom of the forewing. A flat boardwalk/pier-like structure is balanced atop the woman's head and has a pineapple, and three black birds resting on it.

Film poster for Los días más largos, a documentary directed by Lenia Tejera León, designed by Annelis Noriega.
At the center of the poster extending to downward, an overturned coffee cup, sitting atop a saucer; coffee pours out of the cup into a river-like spill. This image sits against a tan background where inversions of a boat form a grid-like pattern.

Film poster for Pompi, a documentary directed by Janis Reyes, designed by Jacqueline Brito Jorge.
On a black background is a hand originating from the top of the poster and extending two fingers to the bottom, resembling an upside-down peace sign. The hand does not have normal skin, but rather is covered in intricate designs in green, purple, and cyan. Additionally, the pointer and middle finger on the hand wear small pink ballet shoes, which makes the hand itself resemble a dancer on point. The entire hand is outlined with a white dotted line. At the top of the poster, the film title is pink and written in elegant, cursive lettering. The director's name is under it in bold, capital letters. At the bottom of the poster is the designer's name in the same bolded font.

Film poster for From Pawn to King, a documentary film directed by Gloria Argüelles, designed by Liudmila López Domínguez.
The foreground of the poster features a grey staircase ascending to an infinte point in the distance with one pawn at the lower end of the staircase, and a mass of other red pawns at the base of the stairs. In the upper right corner, a halftone black and white hand grasps a red king chess piece and moves it towards two red pawns on a chessboard background. The chessboard background alternates red and white squares: each white square has a red outline of a high heel shoe; each red square has a white outline of a loafer. The title appears in white space at the top of the poster with decorative elements added under the '"o" in peon to create the shape of a pawn; A cross shape added to the top of the "r" in rey, resembles the shape of a king chess piece.

Film poster for Ociel, a film directed by Marisol Trujillo, designed by Katia Hernández.
The poster is a black background with large and thin white text. In the bottom part, the title Ociel is written in all capital letters at a slant, starting in the lower left corner and reaching half way up the right side of the poster. Instead of a traditional "O," the first letter of the film title is a series of concentric circles surrounding a small red sphere with red dots along each line, resembling the orbits of a planetary system. Additionally, at the ending points of each letter, vertical lines extend to the top and bottom of the poster. The line extending down from the "L" is not complete. Instead, there is a break in the middle and the text for the information of the film is typed vertically along the line. The text for the graphic design is in the lower left corner of the poster.
